Plural AI - Senior Backend Engineer, Python (London)
ABOUT PLURAL AI
Our founders met through deep-tech incubator Entrepreneur First, and have a mix of in-depth industry experience and deep technical expertise.
We're tackling some ambitious, complex, deep-tech problems at the core of modern work. We aim to redefine human-computer interaction and set the standard in intelligence augmentation.
You'll get to work with some of the most innovative technologies out there (supported by in-house research in conjunction with university labs), including:

- Knowledge based systems
- Graph databases
- Cognitive computing
- Natural language processing
- Machine / deep learning

As a core member of the early team, you will be heavily involved in crafting and developing our culture.
'Ask more questions' is our tagline. It is at the heart of our product (we enable our users to ask more questions, and also think of the right questions to ask) and at the heart of our company too. It is at the root of many other well-known principles that we support - from first-principle thinking to 'strong opinions, weakly held'.
Our other, related founding axiom is 'look for the desire paths'. We look for the shortcuts, the ways to do things better. Unconstrained by existing preconceptions, we have a healthy disregard for rules, and we don't hesitate to question and circumvent them if it leads to better outcomes.

ABOUT YOU
You're an experienced engineer with excellent technical skills. You have spent several years honing your craft as an individual contributor, you've internalized best practices and good processes, and you're now ready to step up and lead development efforts at an exciting early-stage venture. You are ambitious, and eager to make a massive impact as one of the key first hires at an early-stage company.

You have a pragmatic yet rigorous mindset - you move fast, but thoughtfully. You understand the constraints of start-up life, and how to make the right trade-offs in pursuit of speed and good execution. You pride yourself on writing clean, elegant, maintainable code, and you're a stickler for details.

You see yourself as a player-coach - you can do the work yourself and you're happy to get stuck in, but you can also develop and mentor more junior engineers, and lead the way when it comes to planning. You're process-oriented and have excellent organizational skills, and you're proactive and opinionated about design decisions.

ABOUT THE ROLE
Mission:
You will own the entire back-end processing architecture. Your mission is two-fold:
1. Build a solid, high-performing infrastructure capable of supporting our product at scale
2. Drive pace and set exacting standards for the technical organization, and eventually build and lead a world-class team
Goals

  • Design, implement and manage a scalable workflow infrastructure which orchestrates the execution of a sequence of independent processing tasks
  • Scale up the workflow pipeline, so we can process millions of data sources rapidly and cost-effectively. You'll be in charge of identifying bottlenecks and opportunities for more effective automation
  • Initially, the workflow pipeline will be focused on the extraction, understanding and ingestion of useful information from multiple sources. You will contribute to the implementation of these tasks in conjunction with others in the team, which will provide a good opportunity to build your expertise in machine learning and processing graph-based data
  • Contribute to the team's dev-ops process, the build-test-release delivery pipeline and the monitor and planning feedback loop. The former is likely to involve ensuring test coverage, establishing a continuous integration process and new test environments. The latter may involve creating internal tools to detect and (ultimately) anticipate problems
  • Build our internal operations dashboard, which will allow our internal users to review and curate data
  • Build the APIs that will facilitate access to our computational knowledge engine, to be used by a new web-based user interface we're building
  • Implement robust internal processes to establish a high-performing tech organization, such as coding standards and general development best practices, and actively participate in recruitment efforts and mentoring of new hires

Required Skills

  • 3-5y+ minimum production experience with experience of all stages of development
  • 1-2y+ minimum experience at a start-up / early-stage business / working in small teams (must be comfortable designing/building projects from scratch)
  • Solid Python skills (used in production)
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms / dev-ops tools (GCP, Kubernetes, etc.)
  • Experience with CI/CD, setting up testing infrastructure
  • NoSQL databases (MongoDB), ideally graph databases too (Neo4j)

Desired Skills

  • Web experience (React JS, GraphQL) a plus
  • Engineering/computer science degree or related discipline a plus
